Cats are possibly the most widespread choice of pet. Generally owners choose to introduce their new pet from being just hours old, and the feline will stay with them right up to its final days. We like the loyalty of animals, as they are such placid creatures, and supply their masters with unconditional affection.

From the day it comes home, disciplining the pet is vital, unless you want a prospect of unpleasant smells and damp patches on the floor, not to mention tugged-at furniture and maybe even bites. You’ll soon become familiar with the godsend of scratch posts, litter boxes, and inevitably wiping down the carpet with cleaning products.

There is some brilliant information on the internet on training your cat. Finding out about other people’s experience will prove to be invauable.

Felines will however soon become better behaved, remembering to go to their litter tray when they need to urinate or poop. Once the habit has been mastered, the remainder should appear simple – only moving the pet away from furniture when it begins to misbehave.

The commitment to your cat does not end yet – you will shortly discover that the inconvenience of a new cat is seen most when you need to be away for a number of weeks. If you’re well connected a relative or neighbour might be happy to make a visit to your house frequently to top up the feed bowl or maybe clean out the poop. Longer holidays will similarly need advance plans as pets generally do not to travel with their owners. A handy hint is to holiday sit with another neighbourhood pet owner, then so long as breaks don’t clash, you will have somebody to rely on when you aren’t about to care for your pet.

Last but not least, you want to be aware of the infrequent costs involved with cat care. Vet’s treatment may be quite large, so consider opportunities in pet insurance. It’s proportionally inexpensive (particularly next to the medical costs!) and will insure you in the event of a considerable bill dropping through your door following an illness.

Most importantly though, the pleasure of a happy pet on your sofa watching the television is well worth the inconvenience, and there’s nothing quite like the sound of that purr. You’ll have a soulmate for ever, even if they do make you mad every now and again!
