The old adage says that you are what you eat. Obviously, this isn’t a literal truth but the importance of a good diet for cat health care as well as our own cannot be underestimated. Ensuring our cats get all the nutrients they need to keep themselves in good health might be a big responsibility but it doesn’t have to be complicated if we understand a few simple rules.

We all know the importance of keeping hydrated and this is important to felines too. Without access to fresh drinking water a cat can become seriously ill within a few hours. Dehydration can lead to grave cat health care problems and eventually death.
Cats require a very specific diet. Because they are obligate carnivores, felines cannot survive on a vegetarian diet. Depriving a cat of meat in its diet cause such cat health care problems as malnutrition, blindness and death.

Because of the very specific dietary requirements of our feline friends, owners must take care to try not to upset the delicate balance of their diets. Giving titbits of human food may seem harmless but can have implications for cat health care. The food we eat is generally too high in calories and fat and could even be toxic to a cat. Onions, for example, are highly toxic to felines.

In the wild, cats would eat several small meals everyday and owners should try to accommodate this. In many cases school and work commitments might mean that owners are unable to be at home to feed their cat during the day. To resolve this problem, why not leave out dried food for the cat to nibble at throughout the day.

Finally, at the same time as considering diet we must consider obesity which is one of the greatest threats to cat health care. Obesity can cause heart and breathing problems, arthritis and eventually death, so pet owners must try to avoid it. As a guideline, one could consider a short haired cat to be a healthy weight if its ribs can be felt but not seen. Pay close attention to the instructions for serving sizes on cat food and always see a vet if you believe that your cat’s weight is a problem.
